Specialty Programs complement academics and offer students the opportunity to develop skills, talents, and passions in a myriad of ways throughout their Armstrong career. People with dyslexia often demonstrate great strengths in areas such as spatial awareness, problem-solving, creative and innovative thinking, empathy, and making connections. Armstrong Specialty Programs help students find and develop their strengths.

Art Program

In Armstrong’s vibrant Visual Arts program, students build upon their creative skills year after year through a thoughtfully scaffolded curriculum. As they progress, they explore a variety of media, learn new techniques, take creative risks, and develop a lifelong passion for artistic expression.

Athletics

Our athletics program encourages all students to participate and is coordinated by our athletic director, with faculty and staff serving as coaches. Teams practice during the school day and compete after school, with 8–11 teams offered across four seasons. 4th and 5th graders, we offer basketball and soccer with an emphasis on participation, fun, and teamwork.

Students build musical literacy through listening, singing, composing and collaborating, and they engage with both group and individual experiences that support their strengths and nurture new skills. Movement facilitates cognition and prepares the brain for optimal learning. At Armstrong, Movement is a multi-faceted class designed specifically for Lower School students. Through intentional, engaging, and brain-based activities, students strengthen both their bodies and minds as they grow as learners. Each class is designed to build confidence and prepare the brain for optimal learning, all while having fun.

Lower School Physical Education

The PE program at Charles Armstrong celebrates and recognizes the entire student no matter their skill, experience, or learning style. All activities are taught with the thought of “all students learn differently” mindset. While for some, athletics/physical activities come naturally, or are enjoyed, we also lean on our inclusive classroom environment for those who might not favor PE. We are proud to offer a wide range of activities for our student’s success.

Performing Arts

The performing arts program is a vibrant part of the educational experience, designed to cultivate creativity, and confidence, highlight the strengths of students with Dyslexia, and authentically apply academic skills. 2nd-5th grade students take the spotlight in the Lower School Winter Program, an integrated concert of music and movement. The community comes together for a lower and middle school talent show, celebrating a wide array of strengths and affinities. The pinnacle of the program is the ambitious, school-wide musical staged at a professional theatre venue, offering students a chance to experience the rigor and excitement of a large-scale production.
