This year’s Benefit will support the Mr. D and Mr. Smith Fund for Specialty Programs. Scott “Mr. D” Douthit and Mr. Smith are two iconic Armstrong educators who will be retiring at the end of this school year. Their long tenure and impact on generations of Armstrong students are unparalleled.
Mr. D will complete 38 years of service. He created the school’s Theater Arts program and Middle School Musical tradition as well as teaching PE and coaching. Russ Smith was recruited by Mr. D to join him as a PE teacher. During his 36 years at Armstrong, Mr. Smith created the school’s Athletics Program, and served as the Athletic Director and League Commissioner for decades.

In their honor, we are launching the Mr. D and Mr. Smith Fund for Specialty Programs. Specialty Programs include Athletics, Theater Arts, Music, Visual Arts, Makerspace and Design Thinking, Electives, and the Library, all of which complement our academics to create a rich and engaging educational experience to help students with dyslexia find their superpowers.
